An At-Home Ritual for the Spring Equinox

The spring equinox falls on March 19th and personally, it’s one of my favorite times of the year. While everyone uses the calendar New Year as a time to reflect, set new intentions, and create resolutions, I like to use the spring equinox.

What is the spring equinox?

This is a day that marks the astrological New Year as well as the start of spring and end of winter.

Traditionally resolutions are set for January 1st, but I like to think that as a society we have this all wrong. If you're anything like me, January is still a time that I'm in full hibernation mode. The cold weather is in full affect and sunshine-filled days are minimal. Yet, we all take part in this manic energy to set new goals and resolutions, most of which fizzle out within the month. I believe that these resolutions fail, not because we don't believe in them or fully want these changes, but because our bodies are not in the place to go forward in this particular season.

I believe the best time to actually set intentions and to make these resolutions are when our bodies are waking up while the earth is waking up. This time of the year allows for movement and warmth, providing the energy and strength to actually follow our intentions into the new season.

Intention Setting: At Home Ritual

One at home ritual that I find particularly inspiring is to plant literal seeds as a representation of your intentions for the coming season. I’d like to encourage you to take part in this ritual with me by choosing seeds that speak to you or to the season.

Just as we are coming out of the dormancy of winter and are starting to feel the warmth of the sunlight, plants are also going to begin to grow and bloom into this New Year.

Take this time to think about your intentions for the year ahead.

What are your goals, your aspirations, and your dreams?

As you plant these seeds imagine how they will bloom and grow, providing new life, just as your intentions will do for your life.

Let the seeds be a reminder that some intentions have to be tended in order for them to flourish, just as yours do.

When the seeds begin to transform into a beautiful plant, remember to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this new life in this new season.

My Fleurot deck is a great place to look for botanical inspiration if you need a little guidance. It’s important to choose seeds that are not only in season, but that resonate with you.

While you can practice this ritual in an outdoor garden, you can also simply use a small pot in your window, your countertop, or your desk at work.

Not a lot of space? Another option is to plant an herb that you can cook and interact with, serving to provide you with nourishment while being pretty and offering a delightful smell.

Spring Tarot Spread

If you're in search of what your intentions are or aren’t sure which seed to choose I've included a spread below to help guide you through your spring intentions.
